I mean, I didn’t hate it to start with, and now that I’ve played around with this 3D model viewer and seen it from a few different angles, I’m actually starting to quite like it.

I still think they’d do well to make the saucer a bit bigger relative to the rest of it, and the nacelles could use some refinement... But, on the whole, yeah, not bad.

Here’s the actual reveal trailer if you haven’t seen it yet. They’ve confirmed that the CGI is very not-final - as in, thrown together in a couple of weeks - and neither is the complete ship design. I expect the CG to end up looking, well, about as good as television CG tends to these days, but I doubt the ship design itself’ll change all that much.

In any case: YO, STAR TREK’S BACK.

Still not a fan. I agree the saucer seems too small. If it were the same width as the aft section, it might actually look pretty decent. Right now it just looks unbalanced (could be intentional, small crew section + large engineering section = more of a warship? but given the ship’s name, and what we’ve heard about the show, that doesn’t make much sense.) It also makes it look vaguely Klingon in design.

Definitely getting massive Klingon vibes, off both Discovery herself and the music in the trailer. (The music’s supposed to be their composer’s audition track, though, so that might not mean anything.)

I just think she has more decent angles than I first assumed. In any case, I’m not that fussed, to be honest; while the starships are a pretty massive part of why I like Star Trek - as my fairly extensive model collection will attest - ultimately what’s important is whether the series is good. If it is, I’ll come to love Discovery simply for being, well, the place where it all happened.

It’s a little like how I think the best-looking Enterprise is probably the Constitution Refit, but my favourite will always be the D. (Though, to be fair, I actually love the Galaxy-class design as well. I flip-flop on it and the Connie refit constantly.)

Came here to say exactly that!

I remember reading a fanfic, right after the release of ST:TMP , in which Scotty had released a research paper to the Starfleet Corps of Engineers comparing Klingon and Federation warp technology.

It turned out that rectangular prism warp nacelles were more efficient than cylindrical ones.

The paper was quite well-done, complete with comparison charts and figures, and even footnotes and a bibliography

The only way this story could get any more Star Trek fandom would be if Scotty had doodled Kirk and Spock snogging in the margins.

(For the record, I’ve actually always preferred the squarer nacelles of the Connie refit to The Original Series’ tubes. It’s part of why the ridiculously bulbous and oversized nacelles of the Kelvin Timeline films really haven’t done it for me so far.)

That’s the least erotic fanfiction I’ve ever read.
